Team 6-1 News
Team 6-1, Team Liberty, has had a very busy month!  They recently had the privilege of having Mr. Tom Cooper, father of Cara Cooper, speak to students on Veteran's Day.  Mr. Cooper served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  The students enjoyed his talk and learned many new facts about the military.  The students later wrote letters to local Veterans or family members who have served our country.

Emergency Dismissals
In the past, early dismissal has occurred because of a power failure, inclement weather, or a threat to the school.  This sometimes catches parents off guard.  With winter here, bad weather could be upon us at any time.  Like you, we do not want your child going home to an unsafe situation.  It is important for families to discuss with their children what to do if an emergency situation would occur.  All families should have a contingency plan.  Talk to your children about house keys or where to go if no one is home.

Scoliosis Screening
The Ohio Department of Health has recommended that all schools participate in a Scoliosis Screening Program.  Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine, which often progresses during the pre-teen growth spurt.  Students in the 7th and 8th grades will be screened during January.  A video describing the screening procedure will be shown to students and a letter will be sent home prior to the screening.  If a problem is suspected during the January screening, your child will be re-checked by a nurse from the Cincinnati Spine Center on March 25.  Following the second screening, parents will be notified if a problem is suspected.

PTO NEWS
The holidays are a busy time for all . . . and that includes the PTO!  The GEMS PTO has been involved in many fun events during November.  PTO would like to thank all of you who helped with the:
7th/8th Grade Dance  - This event was a big success!  Over 300 students attended the dance!  Special thanks to the parents who sold tickets during lunches and those brave parents who chaperoned at the dance.
Staff Conference Meals - The PTO hosted two staff dinners on the nights of parent/teacher conferences. The meals were delicious!  Thanks to all parents who brought in desserts and other items.  PTO would also like to thank Sharla Busch, Rhonda Gentry and Robin Webb for coordinating these staff meals.  They did a great job!!
Book Fair - The Book Fair was so popular it was carried over two days!  Sales were in excess of $3,000!  Special thanks to all parents who volunteered their time to staff the book fair.  In addition, PTO would like to thank Suzanne Conner for coordinating the volunteer schedule and Linda Worrall for setting up the Book Fair each day.  PTO would also like to recognize Jean Meredith, school librarian.  Every year Mrs. Meredith spends a great deal of her time assisting the PTO with the Book Fair.  Her help is really appreciated!
PTO Holiday Meeting/Party - PTO meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the school library but the December meeting has traditionally been a holiday party.  This allows PTO to celebrate successes and recognize volunteers for their support and dedication.  This event will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at  Mio's on  Mt. Carmel Tobasco Rd. at 7:00 p.m.  The cost will be $5.00 per person.  Special guests will include Mr. Kevin Thacker and Dr. Mike Ward, West Clermont School District Superintendent.  You can reserve your seat by completing the enclosed slip and returning it to the school office no later than December 7, 2001.

What time is it?  It's time to buy a GEMS logo watch!  Gold and silver watches are on sale now in the library for $19.75 each.  Stop by and see Mrs. Meredith if you are interested.  This would make a great gift for your child this Christmas!
